May we suggest a brief itinerary for your stay in Coorg?

Day1

  • Talacauvery, the birth place of river Cauvery is 48 Km from Madikeri. It is a pilgrimage centre at the bottom of the Brahmagiri hills. A climb to the top of the hills is challenging, but the scenic beauty is awe-inspiring.
  • If you leave early in the morning, around 8 a.m. , you can be back in Madikeri for lunch. In the afternoon you can spend time sauntering around Madikeri town, shopping in its quaint shops, buying pepper, honey, cardamom and coffee.
  • Alternatively, you could also do some sight seeing. The Fort is situated on a hillock in the centre of the town. It was built by King Lingaraja in the 19th century. A chapel built by the British, inside the fort premises, houses a museum which gives you a glimpse of Kodava history.
  • Raja’s seat is a place worth visiting, especially in the early mornings. It boasts of a spectacular view of hazy mountains and hills and serpentine roads. It overlooks a huge deep valley. The Rajas of Kodagu used to relax in the evenings here.
  • Gandi Mantap is also close to Raja seat. It is memorial built on the site where Gandhiji addressed the people of Kodagu during his visit in 1932.
  • The Omkareshwara Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is a blend of Islamic and Gothic styles of architecture.
  • Gaddige are the tombs built in the memory of the king and queen of Kodagu. Islamic architecture is predominant here.
  • Abbey falls is a popular tourist destination about 8 km from Madikeri. The water cascading 70 feet down is a mesmerizing sight. 

 

Day 2

  • Dubbare Elephant Camp(40km) is an elephant training camp set up by the government at the banks of river Cauvery. You have to be there before 9 a.m. if you want to witness the elephants taking a bath.
  • Cauvery Nisargadama (32km) is an ideal picnic spot. It is an island formed by river Cauvery which can be approached by crossing a hanging bridge.
  • Harangi Dam (32km) is a reservoir built across river Harangi is a beautiful picnic spot too.
  • Tibetan Golden Temple (40km) situated in Bylakuppe, one of the oldest Tibetan settlements, gives you a glimpse into Buddhist culture. The temple consists of gigantic statues of Buddha and his disciples plated in gold. There is also a monastery close by.

  • Nagarahole Game Sanctuary (98km)
